We believe we are a progressive modern Troop and we try to offer the very best Scouting possible. We sleep out on approximately 21 nights of the year, this includes residential experiences as well as the more traditional style of camping. We are fortunate that we have access to many Scout Camp and Activity Centres within Hertfordshire and Hertfordshire Scouts own sites in Scotland, Wales and Staffordshire, information can be found on our links page. We are within easy reach of Gliding, Sailing Canoeing and Narrow Boat facilities, we have our own go-kart and purpose built air rifle range. Two to Three times a year we run a youth club experience with pool, table tennis, snooker, air rifle shooting, table football, and darts etc . We also try to fit in at least two Quasar evenings. We meet from 19.00-21.00 Friday evenings during term time and occasionally during school holidays, meeting times change occasionally to suit our programme. Cost per term is £30 or £28 for sibling groups. It is a great help to the Leaders when subs are paid by cheque on the first day of term. It is our policy where possible never to exclude any young person who has a genuine desire to join the movement. It is important therefore that Parents talk to the Leaders should they have problems.
The 1st Hemel Hempstead Scout Group is a charity , all the adults that help make it happen every week for our young people do so voluntary, they do not get any financial rewards and do at times dig into their own pockets. There is very little truth in the rumours that to help in a Scout Group you only have to give up a couple of hours a week. Some can and often do give a lot more, anything from 2 to even 50 hours some weeks.
Subscriptions cover the general running costs of the sections, badges, craft materials, some trips and small equipment costs, approximately 45% of it goes on Personal Accident Insurance for all Members and National and Local Training Levies for Adults in the Movement. Subscriptions cover very little else but we still have to pay our utility bills, our Building and Contents Insurance alone costs almost £1000 per annum. We have no alternative but to fund raise - continuously - our main
fundraiser's are Bag Packing, Quiz Nights and Race Nights, we also get donations by allowing the use of HQ to certain parties whom we feel we can trust. Managing a Scout Group is difficult when you consider there is no guaranteed income so it is important that we get full support when we do our fundraising; it is expected that all young people who join us are prepared to help and give their time when asked unless they have a genuine reason not to.
We try to involve our Scouts in some of the many District and County Challenges that are planned yearly. We try when we can to support our District in executing all the exciting things they put on. Almost everything our scouts do goes some way to helping them gain their badges and awards. It may be that they have already completed the criteria for some of the Activity Badges in schools or clubs or even in a hobby. The included links will direct you to all the information needed to make an informed decision and please remember that the abilities of each young person will be taken into consideration when deciding if the badge has been earned. We don’t give them away but nor do we deny them to a deserving Scout.
